Op de site van Microsoft komen we een aankondiging tegen van een nieuw pakket dat het bedrijf heeft ontwikkeld om de papieren rompslomp vooral in de gezondheidszorg tegen te gaan. De applicatie heet InfoPath (voorheen 'XDocs') en is een op XML gebaseerde form-tool die in het gebruik erg veel overeenkomt met MS Word. Hierdoor zouden de vele instanties die nu ook met een MS Office-omgeving draaien weinig problemen tegen moeten komen als men op het nieuwe product zou overstappen. InfoPath voldoet verder aan de Clinical Document Architecture (CDA) standaard voor XML, een maatstaf voor het opstellen van gezondheidszorgdocumenten.
Microsoft logo Nu heeft iedere zorginstelling vaak zijn eigen standaard voor het verzamelen van en omgaan met gegevens, iets wat in de veelgelaagde gezondheidsindustrie veelal voor problemen in communicatie en afstemming zorgt. De kracht van InfoPath ligt volgens Microsoft in het feit dat bedrijven met het programma eenvoudig zelf hun gegevensformulieren voor medewerkers en patiënten kunnen opstellen, terwijl de onderliggende XML ervoor zorgt dat de gegevens op een eenduidige wijze kunnen worden verwerkt. Op dit moment wordt bij veel ziekenhuizen en andere zorginstellingen nog een hoop van de informatieinvoer in eerste instantie op papier gedaan, waardoor er een keur aan fouten en afwijkingen kan ontstaan, aldus de softwaregigant:
One of the biggest advantages of InfoPath for the healthcare industry is the fact that it's self-contained. Users don't need to be online to enter information, yet that data still gets subjected to the rigors of data validation and compliance with the XML schema used in the InfoPath solution, whether it is an industry standard schema like CDA or a custom one. In the case of home care, this is a unique advantage. In this situation, nurses visit patients in their homes and have to collect a lot of patient data while they're there. Because this information is usually collected on paper, the nurses often end up having to spend two or three hours back at the office retyping patient information into the back-end system. Using InfoPath and a laptop or a Tablet PC, nurses can enter the patient data onsite at the patient's home and then quickly synchronize that content with the back-end system when they return to the office. In this type of situation, InfoPath can really help improve the productivity of the people who take care of these patients.
