A sixth attempt by NASA's Mars Odyssey spacecraft to communicate with the Mars probe Beagle 2 failed on Tuesday. The spacecraft attempted to make contact with the probe as it passed over Beagle 2's landing site.

But scientists say they are still holding out hope that Beagle 2 might communicate with its "mothership" - the Mars Express orbiter - which will fly over the landing site in early January.

A team of experts based at the National Space Centre in Leicester is currently thrashing out all the possible reasons for Beagle 2's silence.

"We are looking at a number of possible failure modes that we might do something about," Mark Sims, Beagle 2 mission manager, told a press conference in London on Monday.

The team has ruled out the idea that stormy weather on Mars disrupted the lander's descent. Snapshots from NASA's Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft, taken shortly after Beagle 2's scheduled touchdown, have shown that the weather in the landing region was fairly calm.

One possibility is that a software glitch has confused the lander's onboard clock, which tells Beagle 2 when to transmit signals. That might mean that the lander did not try to communicate with Mars Odyssey when it passed overhead.

Another possibility is that the lander has fallen into a crater. The Mars Global Surveyor pictures have also revealed a crater 1 kilometre wide in the centre of Beagle 2's target landing area.

Beagle 2 could have touched down inside this crater and been battered by rocks as it tumbled down a steep slope. Or it might have ended up in the shadow of the crater wall, where it would be unable to recharge its solar-powered batteries.

But Colin Pillinger, lead scientist on the project, says it would be incredible bad luck if Beagle 2 happened to fall into the crater. The chances of this happening are slim, he says.

An alternative reason for Beagle 2's silence is that its solar panels failed to unfold following the landing. Or its communications antenna might be obstructed, or pointing in the wrong direction.

There is, however, a small chance that a communications mismatch between Odyssey and Beagle 2 is preventing contact between them. If so, it is still possible that the Mars Express orbiter will receive signals from the lander when it passes overhead on 4 January.

The possible failure of Beagle 2 will not stop the UK participating in such difficult projects again, says Lord Sainsbury, UK minister for science and innovation. "We've always recognised that Beagle 2 was a high-risk project, and we must avoid the temptation in future to only do low-risk projects," he says.

He adds that the UK should work with the European Space Agency to design a "Beagle 3" in some shape or form and continue the robotic search for life on Mars.
